Remembering Michael Jackson - June 25, 2009

One of my favourite artists, Mike Tompkins, has shared with us his tribute to Michael Jackson.  His version of "Michael Jackson's PYT - Pretty Young Thing" is so upbeat and very creative.  Mike makes all his music with just his voice and mouth.  Thanks to Mike for such amazing talent.

Lessons from Geese

Lessons from Geese

Fact 1

As each goose flaps its wings, it creates an “uplift” for the birds that follow.   By flying in a “V” formation, the whole flock has 71% greater flying range than if each bird flew alone.

Lesson

People who share a common direction and sense of community can get where they are going quicker and easier, because they are traveling on the thrust of each other.


Fact 2

When a goose falls out of formation, it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of flying alone.   It quickly moves back into formation to take advantage of the lifting power of the bird immediately in front of it.

Lesson

If we have as much sense as a goose, we stay in formation with those headed where we want to go.   We are willing to accept their help and give our help to others.


Fact 3

When the lead bird tires, it rotates back into the formation to take advantage of the lifting power of the bird immediately in front of it.

Lesson

It pays to take turns doing the hard tasks and sharing leadership.   As with geese, people are interdependent on each others’ skills, capabilities, and unique arrangement of gifts, talents, or resources.


Fact 4

The geese flying in formation honk to encourage those up front to keep up their speed.

Lesson

We need to make sure our honking is encouraging.   In groups where there is encouragement, the production is much greater.   The power of encouragement (to stand by one’s heart or core values and to encourage the heart and core values of others) is the quality of honking we seek.


Fact 5

When a goose gets sick, wounded, or shot down, two geese drop out of formation and follow it down to help and protect it.   They stay with it until it dies or is able to fly again.   Then, they launch out with another formation to catch up with the flock.

Lesson

If we have as much sense as geese, we will stand by each other in difficult times as well as when we’re strong.

Note: Lessons from Geese was transcribed from a speech given by Angeles Arien at the 1991 Organizational Development Network.   It was based on the work of Milton Olson. It circulated to Outward Bound staff throughout the United States.

There is a lot to learn from geese.  I think they've got it figured out pretty good.

Wear Sunscreen (The Awesome Speech and Song)

Wear sunscreen.

If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it. The long-term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists, whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience. I will dispense this advice now.

Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth. Oh, never mind. You will not understand the power and beauty of your youth until they've faded. But trust me, in 20 years, you'll look back at photos of yourself and recall in a way you can't grasp now how much possibility lay before you and how fabulous you really looked. You are not as fat as you imagine.

Don't worry about the future. Or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubble gum. The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that never crossed your worried mind, the kind that blindside you at 4 p.m. on some idle Tuesday.

Do one thing every day that scares you.

Sing.

Don't be reckless with other people's hearts. Don't put up with people who are reckless with yours.

Floss.

Don't waste your time on jealousy. Sometimes you're ahead, sometimes you're behind. The race is long and, in the end, it's only with yourself.

Remember compliments you receive. Forget the insults. If you succeed in doing this, tell me how.

Keep your old love letters. Throw away your old bank statements.

Stretch.

Don't feel guilty if you don't know what you want to do with your life. The most interesting people I know didn't know at 22 what they wanted to do with their lives. Some of the most interesting 40-year-olds I know still don't.

Get plenty of calcium. Be kind to your knees. You'll miss them when they're gone.

Maybe you'll marry, maybe you won't. Maybe you'll have children, maybe you won't. Maybe you'll divorce at 40, maybe you'll dance the funky chicken on your 75th wedding anniversary. Whatever you do, don't congratulate yourself too much, or berate yourself either. Your choices are half chance. So are everybody else's.

Enjoy your body. Use it every way you can. Don't be afraid of it or of what other people think of it. It's the greatest instrument you'll ever own.

Dance, even if you have nowhere to do it but your living room.

Read the directions, even if you don't follow them.

Do not read beauty magazines. They will only make you feel ugly.

Get to know your parents. You never know when they'll be gone for good. Be nice to your siblings. They're your best link to your past and the people most likely to stick with you in the future.

Understand that friends come and go, but with a precious few you should hold on. Work hard to bridge the gaps in geography and lifestyle, because the older you get, the more you need the people who knew you when you were young.

Live in New York City once, but leave before it makes you hard. Live in Northern California once, but leave before it makes you soft. Travel.

Accept certain inalienable truths: Prices will rise. Politicians will philander. You, too, will get old. And when you do, you'll fantasize that when you were young, prices were reasonable, politicians were noble and children respected their elders.

Respect your elders.

Don't expect anyone else to support you. Maybe you have a trust fund. Maybe you'll have a wealthy spouse. But you never know when either one might run out.

Don't mess too much with your hair or by the time you're 40 it will look 85.

Be careful whose advice you buy, but be patient with those who supply it. Advice is a form of nostalgia. Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.
But trust me on the sunscreen.

Use the Good Dishes

Use the good dishes; what are you waiting for?
Putting life on hold, hoping for something more?

I’ll tell you when is good: good is every day.
Look at the millions of people who didn’t wake up today.

I’ll bet they’d trade a day for every one we waste.
Pretend you’ve got a year to live,
Wouldn’t you then make haste?

To tell those close you love them,
And cherish them so much,
Your friends who have been there for you,
All the lives you’ve touched.

Would you notice puffy clouds, hear birds,
And smell the flowers?
Climb a mountain, sing and dance,
Look for rainbows after the showers?

Forgive someone who’s hurt you?
What about the things you’ve done?
Do you need to say I’m sorry to a
Parent, a child or someone

That you meant to spend some time with,
But stuff got in the way?
Oh well, there’s always tomorrow,
Or maybe some other day.

I’ll be happy when – I’ll be happy if
I met the right one,
Or when I’m retired,
Or my mortgage is paid.
Soon I’ll have some fun.

The beauty of life is the journey,

Anti-Joke Humour


Anti-Jokes (or Anti-Humour) is a type of comedy in which the audience is set up to expect a typical joke setup however the joke ends with such anticlimax that it becomes funny in its own right. The lack of punchline is the punchline.  They are considered "groaners".   The funniest part of anti-jokes is telling them to people that appear baffled!

The most popular anti-joke of all time is:

Why did the chicken cross the road?  
- To get to the other side.  

Here are some of my favourite anti-jokes:

What is red and smells like blue paint? 
 - Red Paint

What is brown and sticky?
 - A stick

A dyslexic man walks into a bra.

What did the farmer say who'd lost his tractor?
 - Where's my tractor?

What is blue and fluffy?
 - Blue fluff

A duck walks into a bar.
 - Animal control is promptly called, and the duck is released in a nearby park.

What did the lawyer say to the other lawyer?
 - We are both lawyers.

What do you get when you cross a Mexican with an octopus?
 - Nothing.  Two different species cannot propagate and gene splicing isn't advanced enough to separate the specific traits of an organism.

Why was six afraid of seven?
 - It wasn't.  Numbers are not sentient and thus incapable of feeling fear.

What's green and has wheels?
 - Grass.  I was kidding about the wheels.

What do you call a chicken in Antarctica?
 - Lost
 
Two cows are in a field.  Suddenly, from behind a bush, a rabbit leaps out and runs away.  One cows looks around a bit, eats some grass then wanders off.

Why are black people so good at basketball?
 - Because they practice.

Two men were walking along when they came across a set of tracks.  The first man said, "Deer tracks!".  The second man said, "Rabbit tracks!".  While they stood there arguing, the train ran both men over.

How are a plum and a rabbit alike?
 - They are both purple, except for the rabbit.

Dance, Love, Sing, Live

My new wall poster for my work space.


Dance as though no one is watching

I bought this wall poster (it's huge!) to bring to work to hang in my work space.  I wanted a cheerful, bright, happy poster to brighten up my day. Gerbera daisies are the fifth most popular flower in the world, and they symbolize innocence, purity, friendship, beauty and of course, cheerfulness!  They are big, and bright and you can't help but be happy and cheerful when you see them.

My New Happy Shoes

I have purchased a new pair of Alegria shoes.  Alegria means "Happiness" in Italian.  They are really comfy, and they have a sparkly rhinestone buttlerfly on the side.  Their catalog I received with the shoes states the following:
