Chocolate Chip Banana Muffins

Here's an easy and yummy recipe for Chocolate Chip Banana Muffins.  My daughter and I enjoy making these together.  This recipe was adapted from the following website: http://allrecipes.com//Recipe/chocolate-chip-banana-muffins-2/Detail.aspx

Ingredients:

1 cup all-purpose flour
3/4 cup whole wheat flour
3/4 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 egg
1/4 cup vegetable oil
2 tablespoons milk
1/2 cup plain yogurt
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup mashed ripe bananas
3/4 cup semisweet chocolate chips

Directions:

In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt.  In another bowl combine the egg, oil, milk, yogurt and vanilla.  Stir into dry ingredients, just until moistened.  Fold in bananas and chocolate chips.  Fill greased or paper-lined muffin cups two-thirds full.  Bake at 350 degrees F for 22-25 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.  Cool for 5 mintues before removing from pans to wire racks. Makes 12 muffins.

Eat and enjoy.

Have a great day!

The Little Don Juan ♥

With Romeo and Juliet, you're talking about two people who meet one night, and get married the same night.  I believe in love at first sight - but it hasn't happened to me yet.
- Leonardo DiCaprio

My 13-year-old daughter, Simone, went to a local fast food restaurant with four of her friends.  They had finished eating, and went over to the play structure to "hang out".  My daughter noticed a young blond-haired boy, about six years old, staring at her from the play structure.  She was sitting on the side of the structure, and he came over and asked,

"Do you want to be my friend?"

"I would LOVE to be your friend", she replied.

They exchanged names.  He went on to tell her that she was "so beautiful".  Her friends were snickering and enjoying the exchange between Simone and this young boy, apparently awestruck.

Then he asked,

"Oh, do you want to get married?"

"Ya, of course I'd get married", she said.

He started to follow her everywhere.  Then he started holding on to her arm, and hugging her.  He started to kiss her hand, and put his arm around her.  At this point, she was feeling a little uncomfortable, and wished that he would leave her alone.  She devised a get-away plan.  She said a little white lie, and told this little boy that one of her male friends was in fact her boyfriend.  This little boy then started standing up to him, and he was shaking his fist in his face.  All of Simone's friends were holding back their laughter at this point, trying not to make this little boy feel bad.  At one point this little Don Juan was thinking of kissing her on the lips, but Simone was able to divert a very awkward moment by saying that she couldn't kiss him on the lips, because then it would be like cheating on her "boyfriend".

Eventually Simone left the play structure area, and the little boy went over to share his excitement with his Grandmother.  She came over to Simone, smiled, and said in an embarrassing tone, "It sounds like you have a little admirer".  Simone replied equally embarrassed with, "Um, ya".

As Simone and her friends were leaving the restaurant, this little boy said, desperately,

"Are you gonna come back?" as he blew her a kiss.

"Ya, I'll be back", she replied; and smiled.

Lorenzo the Cat

Still Life with Cat

I found this cute website, about Lorenzo the Cat.  The photographer Joann Biondi of Miami, says her cat, Lorenzo, is an ordinary, working-class feline.  He is mellow and independent.  He just happens to like fashionable clothes and enjoys having his picture taken.

Check out the website at http://www.lorenzothecat.com/.  The "Gallery Prints/Shop" section is very entertaining.  Some of my favourites are Born Free and Buddha Puss.  I'll have to ask if he could do a "Canadian Cat".

Have a great day!

The Raven's Visit

According to renowned animal spirit message expert, Dr. Steven Farmer, "Raven is one of the best spirit helpers to have in your consciousness when you’re attempting to manifest anything in your life. He is one that will assist you in reconnecting with the magic and miraculousness of life. Raven will enliven your dreams and also assist you in understanding signs and omens that can provide guidance. When someone you know is ailing, ask Raven to be with them to facilitate their healing."

Today I was stricken by the beauty and majesty of a large black raven.  Although these birds are seen as predators and a nuisance by most people, I got a different feeling when I saw this one.  As I was about to get out of my car, a big black raven sat on the fence directly in front of me.  It walked about eight feet along the fence, all the while looking all around, including looking at me.  At one point it called out, “Cra, Cra, Cra” in a very loud, deliberate way, facing East.  It was as if she was telling me something important.  I witnessed its size and beauty.  Pitch black, with hints of blues as the sunlight hit its feathers.  I was mesmerized by its presence.  I was on the phone with my mom at the time, and she said that a raven is a bad sign – a sign of death.  I didn’t get that feeling at all as I watched this bird grace me with its presence.  My gut feeling was that it had a message for me.  An important, wise and timely message.  I didn’t quite understand at the time what it meant.  It was such a powerful moment that lasted only about 30 seconds, but it was very impressive.

I did some research on what the raven’s symbolism is.  The words magic and wisdom kept popping up for me.  Although some of the literature (mainly Christian) said that a raven is a symbol of death and destruction, I didn’t feel that this was the message that this particular bird was delivering.

What follows below was taken from http://www.druidry.org/ (2011):

"To have a raven's knowledge" is an Irish proverb meaning to have a seer's supernatural powers.  Raven is considered one of the oldest and wisest of animals.  A seer is also described as a visionary: a person with unusual powers of foresight.

Raven is a contrary spirit.  On the negative side, Raven represents the profane, the devil, evil spirits, the trickster and thief, war and destruction, death and doom, the void.

Yet in many cultures Raven also represents deep magic, the mystery of the unknown, death and transformation, creation, healing, wisdom, protection, and prophecy.

Raven is both the symbol of the sun, and the symbol of a moonless night.  She is the birth giving light in the center of our galaxy, and the black hole in the center of the universe, to which we are all traveling to our eventual extinction.

What follows below was found on this site: http://magicway.wordpress.com/2007/09/20/for-our-heather/

I also found this interesting information on a website called "Everyday Magics."  The author talks about the Druid Animals Tarot Deck having the loveliest card for Raven, and the author's Animal Guides book has this to say about the Raven Totem:

Raven represents the ability to go into the Darkness and bring forth the Light.  Northwestern American Indians believe that Raven stole the Sunlight from one who would keep the world in Darkness, therefore Raven is symbolic of the Eternal Cycle of Life and Death.

In Norse mythology Odin had two Ravens that served as his Messengers, their names were Hugin (thought) and Munin (memory).

Because of their ability to mimic other animals’ sounds, Raven is associated with the ability to communicate, and is an extremely powerful creative Totem.

All in all, I feel that this raven brought me some important messages and reminders about wisdom, knowledge, communication and creativity, and I am thankful for this visit. It was a very empowering and inspirational moment for me.

What animal guide or totem are you connected to?  What animal, bird, fish, or other creature is making an impression on you?  What messages are you getting from the universe?

Have a great day!

Thoughts to Ponder

I was looking for some interesting quotes to put on my Facebook status, and I came across this website, Coolnsmart.com - Witty Quotes and Sayings.   I found some great thoughts to ponder and wanted to share them here.  Enjoy!

Home Gym vs. Gym Membership

I have put my gym membership on hold.  I have been going to the same gym for over 3 years, and now I have the option to workout at home.  My daughter wanted to get a gym membership, because she wanted to do some cardio.  As it turns out, getting her a gym membership would be very costly, we'd have to purchase her personal trainings sessions, and we'd have to be the ones bringing her to and from the gym.  We ended up finding a really good deal on an elliptical, so we went for it.  We have a spare room that we have decided to change into a home gym.

So far, it's been a pleasure to use the elliptical in our home gym.  We also have a yoga mat, and my son recently bought me a stability ball for my birthday.  He has some weights that he is letting us use as well.

I am already in the habit of working out 2-3 times a week, and I have used my home gym about 4 times since we set up the elliptical last week.  My daughter has also been using it.

I can already see all the benefits of working out in the home gym.
  • save money in the long run
  • save gas/time driving to/from the gym
  • no inconvenience of parking at the gym, bringing in the bag of clothes/shoes, changing, putting stuff in the locker, and reversing the order again
  • I can sing out loud to the music I play (I had to refrain from singing out loud at the gym)
  • I don't have to worry about germs and disinfecting the equipment like what is expected of all members of the gym
We are considering painting the room a nice bright yellow (right now it's blue and gray).  I want to put some inspirational posters and pictures up and maybe some mirrors.  We have a TV that we will be hooking up so we can watch TV when we are working out. I have an extra fan that we will set up in that room to help keep ourselves cool.

I was trying to figure out how long it will take for the home gym to pay for itself, when compared to paying for a gym membership.  Looks like it'll be one year and a month or two. If you include the cost of my daughter's membership, then it's already paid for itself!

I have told my family that when the door to our home gym is closed, that means I am working out and don't want to be disturbed.  Similar to when I went out to the gym, I wasn't available.  I still schedule my home gym workouts on the calendar, just like I did when I went out to the gym.

The benefits of working out at a real gym are...well, I guess if you are paying for a membership you may feel more obligated to go.  This may increase your chances of sticking to a regular workout routine.  When you are at a gym, there are other people to look at and be motivated by.  There is a wider variety of equipment and programs available as well.

I have 6 months to decide if I will be going back to the real gym.  So far, it doesn't look like it.

Home Gym or Gym Membership. What do you prefer?

Have a great day!

Emergency Landing (A joke)

Two male colleagues are on a commercial flight to New York. After the men have had a couple drinks, the flight attendant, in a panicked voice, announces that the pilot has passed out and asks whether any of the passengers can fly.  The men, both of whom have their pilot's license, rush to the cockpit.

George takes over the controls and heads towards the nearest airport.  He brings the airplane to a screeching halt, almost going over the end of the runway.

"That is the shortest runway I've ever seen!" he shouts to Bernie.  "It can't be more than a hundred feet long!"

"Yeah," Bernie answers, "but it must be at least a mile wide!"

Men Are Clueless (A Funny, True Story)

We spent most of the day preparing for the special event.  My in-laws were celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary that night, and we were secretly hosting my father-in-law's brother and his son from Italy.  Their attendance at the wedding was a  surprise, so we were working very hard at keeping this information from my in-laws.  That morning, my daughter and I were putting together the last touches on our outfit (ie. accessories, hose, etc.) and the guys decided to go out shopping and visiting.

When the guys arrived home with about 10 minutes to spare before we leave for the party, they rushed around to get dressed up.  Both my husband and his Uncle wore suits.  My son and husband's cousin get ready as well in record time.

We are packed up and in the van, all six of us.  My husband is in the driver's seat, I am sitting next to him.  We are well into our drive, and I look down at my husband's pants, and ask him, "What are you wearing?".  What I see is a pair of black, pin-striped pants.  He replies, "I am wearing my new suit".  He looks down at his pants, and I say, "I don't remember you having a pin-striped suit."  He replies adamantly, "I wore this on the cruise".  I reply, "I thought your suit was brown".  Now I can tell he was starting to think more seriously about this.  He looks at the label on the inside of his lapel.  I take a look as well and I didn't recognize the label.  I said, "Maybe you have your Uncle's suit on".  My husband turns back to see what his Uncle is wearing, and his Uncle replies (in Italian), "Yes, I think I have your suit on and and you have mine".  I start laughing, and I we all start realizing what had happened.

When my husband's Uncle had arrived the night prior, I invited him to hang up his clothes in the closet.  This was the same closet that my husband's suit was in.  When my husband went in to get his suit, he picked the one closest to the shirt that I had just ironed for him.  I had just randomly hung the shirt up with no notice of what suit it was hanging beside.  He quickly put the suit on, and then my husband's Uncle put "his" on.  Turns out they each had put each other's suit on and they didn't realize it until we were in the van on the way to the party!

Each man had rationalized why the suit wasn't fitting quite right.  My husband said he was thinking that the pants were a bit short, but shrugged it off.  My husband's Uncle said he was thinking that his pants were a bit tight, and he thought maybe he had gained a few pounds.  He was also thinking that he had many suits, and this brown one was the one his wife had picked out for him.   When they realized what they did, we were all laughing.

We made a stop at a nearby relatives, and the guys switched their suits when they got there.  They arrived at the party with their own suits on.

I laughed so hard that I was crying.  I said to my husband, "it's my fault because I didn't watch what you were putting on".  We told this story at the anniversary party and it made lots of people laugh.

Have a great day!

Live Generously

I saw a bumper sticker on the back of a car that said, "Live Generously".  It made me think about what it means to live generously.  I then found this quote (see above) by the late, great Ronald Reagan, America's 40th president.  Reagan would have been 100 this year.  I added his quote to a picture my son took of my husband and I while we were on vacation in the Black Hills, South Dakota last summer.  What great words from a great man.

How to Get the Most Out of a Personal Facebook Account

Social networking on Facebook can be lots of fun.  Heck, it can even be downright addictive!  Recent research shows us that Facebook is good for our self-esteem, too.  Checking your Facebook once daily is probably a good idea, but I know there are others that are using it more often.  Here are some tips on how to make Facebook more fun, and less frustrating.

Review your “Wall”.  Go to your personal Facebook page and review your wall. What do you see?  How are you presented to your friends?  Are your posts interesting?  Have you posted a lot of the same thing or is there a variety of activity?

“Poke” or “Send Message” to your friends and relatives you don't talk to very often. Let them know you’re thinking of them with a little personal attention every now and then.
“Unfriend” or clean out your Friends list every month or two.  Remove or “Unfriend” people who are inactive, irritate or annoy you or don't ever “Comment” on or “Like” anything you post.  "Unfriend” people who you would most likely not talk to if you bumped into them on the street. “Unfriend” toxic people on Facebook.  Toxic people are always negative, and bring you down.  They usually have negative posts and they are very pessimistic.  They use Facebook to vent and rant.

Ask your friends to “Suggest Friends” for you. They know you best and they know which friends may be enjoyed by you and vice versa. Accept these requests if you feel comfortable enough. Reviewing your friends list every month or two will help you eliminate those who you are not connecting with.

"Hide" those friends who post too often for your liking but you still enjoy sharing and staying connect with on Facebook.  “Hide” those applications (like Farmville for example) that you don’t participate in.

“Ignore” game or application requests if you truly don't like or have time to play Facebook games. Most people don’t even realize that you ignore this because they most likely expect some friends to ignore the request. I personally rarely accept requests for games. On the other hand,  if you are into playing games on Facebook, challenge your friends to a friendly game of Poker or Scrabulous for example. Just know that they may not have time or be interested.

Facebook Chat is also another way to “instant message” your friends.  If your friends are online at the same time as you, you can type them messages in real time.  These little impromptu visits can be fun.

Join Facebook Groups that may be of interest to you. You may make some new friends with similar interests, too.

“Like” Facebook Pages so you will get the latest posts from topics you are interested in on your News Feed.

Avoid posting inappropriate content.  Imagine your grandmother, employer or younger relative reading your posts and viewing your pictures. Don’t post inappropriate pictures of yourself.  If someone else posts a picture of you that you don’t like, ask them to remove it from Facebook.  Don't use profanity and NEVER say anything bad about anyone.  Don’t bully, harass, spread rumours or challenge others to fights.  You can vent but never make someone else look bad. For example-you may hate your boss, teacher or neighbour but keep those comments to yourself.  You can say you’ve had a bad day, but you don’t need to divulge the details.  You never know when or if this will be held against you.

Facebook Holiday or Hiatus:  Be aware that Facebook can be addictive.  Take a Facebook Holiday (deactivate your account) every once in a while to explore other things.  It does a person good.  I have done this and it was very good.

What other things can you think of that will help you get the most out of your personal Facebook account?

Have a great day!

Putting Baby to Sleep

Check out this cute YouTube video, called, Father goes into Baby Crib.  It reminds me of the days when my kids were young.  They loved to fall asleep with Mom or Dad.  If you try to move before they are in a deep sleep, they wake up and you're back to square one.  I never did get into the baby crib though!  Those sleep-deprived days are long-gone now for me.  Here's the home video by Nunzio Raso of this precious moment with his daughter Michela.  The perfect music makes it a joy to watch.

How to Be a Good Friend and Play Nice on Facebook

Interacting on social networks like Facebook can be a whole lot of fun if you know how to make it fun.  It’s a great place to develop, maintain and nurture relationships in this busy world we live in.  There are many ways that you can be nice to people on Facebook, and here are some tips for you so that you can make someone’s day a little brighter and keep connected through Facebook.

The “Like” button:  When you read a post you like, view a photo that is outstanding, or read someone’s comment, click on the “Like” or “Thumbs Up” button.  Facebook will notify that person that someone has “Liked” their post or comment, and it will make them feel good.  Knowing that others are reading and viewing their posts and take the time to show their appreciation makes them feel connected.  Use it instinctively.  If something makes you smile, laugh, or moves you in some way, click on “Like”.  Liking something shows you are interested, like, love or agree with what was posted, be it a photo, video, link, or comment.

Birthdays:  If a notification pops up on the right hand side of your page that it's someone’s birthday, send the person a quick birthday greeting. To make them feel really good post something more personal on their wall.  You can post pictures, videos or comments.

Tagging:  “Tag” people in pictures that are flattering.  If you post something of someone else, let them know you are posting it so that they can comment or tag themselves if they want.

Status:  Post witty or funny statuses.  If you can make someone smile or laugh, that’s a good thing. Try to update your status at least once a day.

Photos:  Post beautiful, funny or interesting photos. People like to see something that is quick and easy to enjoy.

Thank You:  Reply with a comment, “Thank You” when they post on your wall or make nice comments.  Good manners go a long way in keeping connected and encouraging people to engage with you on Facebook.

Write a comment…”: Favourable comments in reply to statuses and posts are preferred.  Humour goes a long way. If something you read or view makes you laugh out loud, ensure you post a comment that states “LOL” (laugh out loud) or “That made me laugh”.   Let them know what you’re thinking.  This can make the other person know that you are paying attention.
Comment on people’s photos:  That usually gets a good discussion going.  Compliment them if it is flattering, let them know they look nice.  Comment if it’s funny.  Get a conversation going.

Supportive comments: Offer condolences or kind words to those who are posting about difficulties or sad times in their lives.  This support can mean a lot to them and help them through a difficult time.

Comments on your wall or news feed:  If someone comments on your wall, create a dialog  by commenting back to them.  Keep the conversation alive.

Posting videos or news items you come across on the Internet:  News items usually have a "Share" button. You can usually share to your Facebook very easily. Add your own comments to the post. If someone else posts something on their wall that you’d like to share with your friends, click the “Share” button under their post on your News Feed so that the person gets credit for bringing it to your attention.  This is also good manners and it prevents the person from feeling like you are “stealing” their idea.

YouTube videos :  Videos on YouTube.com that you find are very easy to share on your Facebook wall. If you find something you like and it makes you laugh, informs or touches you in some way, share it. Chances are others on your friends list will like it too.

Home videos and photographs:
These are the best way to invite others into your life.  If you keep your Friends list personal, with people you can trust, this is a great way to share your life with others.  Reconsider doing this if your Friends list includes people you don't really know too well.

What other ways can you be a good friend and play nice on Facebook?  Please add your comments below.

Have a great day!

Just for Today

An Inspirational Thought, Motivational Thought - Just for Today
By Kenneth L. Holmes

Just for today,I will try to live through this day only, and not tackle my whole life problem at once. I can do something for twelve hours that would appall me if I felt that I had to keep it up for a lifetime.

Just for today, I will be happy. This assumes to be true what Abraham Lincoln said, that "most folks are as happy as they make up their minds to be."

Just for today, I will try to strengthen my mind. I will study. I will learn something useful. I will not be a mental loafer. I will read something that requires effort, thought and concentration.

Just for today, I will adjust myself to what is, and not try to adjust everything to my own desires. I will take my "luck" as it comes, and fit myself to it.

Just for today, I will exercise my soul in three ways: I will do somebody a good turn, and not get found out. I will do at least two things I don't want to--just for exercise. I will not show anyone that my feelings are hurt; they may be hurt, but today I will not show it

Just for today, I will be agreeable. I will look as well as I can, dress becomingly, talk low, act courteously, criticize not one bit, not find fault with anything and not try to improve or regulate anybody except myself.

Just for today, I will have a program. I may not follow it exactly, but I will have it. I will save myself from two pests: hurry and indecision.

Just for today, I will have a quiet half hour all by myself, and relax. During this half hour, sometime, I will try to get a better perspective of my life.

Just for today, I will be unafraid. Especially I will not be afraid to enjoy what is beautiful, and to believe that as I give to the world, so the world will give to me.

Have a wonderful day today.
