Another Door Opens

"In the end, a job is not just a job; it's who you are...
and if you want to change who you are, well first,
you have to change what you do".
-- From the movie, Repo Men (2010).

Changing jobs is quite difficult in some ways.  My last day of work was very bittersweet.  I had formed great relationships with everyone in the office, and I found myself happy to be moving on, but sad to be leaving the people that I had spent most of my waking hours with over the last 3 and a half years.  I had formed many special bonds with my co-workers, and those mutual feelings became more apparent over those last few days.  In addition to a celebratory luncheon with 15 co-workers, I had three coffee-break parties, and my coworkers brought in baking and goodies.  I received beautiful cards and parting gifts, including a gorgeous pink and silver necklace that I wore on my last day.  I received a bouquet of red and fuchsia flowers that were cheerful and bright, and a beautiful planter filled with lush greenery and yellow petals.  I also received a photo album of pictures of my co-workers.  That's how they will be remembered.  Sitting at their desks, smiling, and taking time out for a photo.  All the hugs on that last day were really special, too.

As I reflect on my last 10 years with the Home Care Program I am proud of all that I've accomplished.  I feel that I have gained a tremendous amount of experience and knowledge.  I am glad to be moving on and ready for new adventures and challenges.  My new career will offer me learning opportunities and a chance to develop my skills even further as a Geriatric Mental Health Clinician.

I am happy to have had a wonderful team to work with in my last few years and grateful for my next opportunity.  I look forward to keeping in touch with my former coworkers, and meeting new people in my next job.  When one door closes, another one opens.  There are opportunities everywhere.  Change is scary, but sometimes necessary.  An open door awaits.

Take care,

Funny Ways to Order a Pizza

For Friday Lite this week, I came across this funny site, called, "60 Ways to Order a Pizza" at "The Jokes Place".  I love pizza, and I started laughing out loud as I read it.  I have to share with you some of the funny ways to order pizza that made me laugh.  I think I can relate to this for a few reasons.  One of my first jobs was at a pizza restaurant, and I often took the calls for pick up and delivery orders.  I could imagine myself, as a young teenager, receiving these calls. Secondly, I think we all have ordered pizza at one time or another, and as I read through the list I could just imagine certain people I know saying these things for a laugh or two.  Hope you enjoy this list as much as I did.

  • If using a touch-tone, press random numbers while ordering. Ask the person taking the order to stop doing that.
  • Make up a charge-card name. Ask if they accept it.
  • Terminate the call with, "Remember, we never had this conversation."
  • Tell the order taker a rival pizza place is on the other line and you're going with the lowest bidder.
  • Give them your address, exclaim, "Oh, just surprise me!" and hang up.
  • In your breathiest voice, tell them to cut the crap about nutrition and ask if they have something outlandishly sinful.
  • Tell them to put the crust on top this time.
  • Ask what the order taker is wearing.
  • Tell the order taker you're depressed. Get him/her to cheer you up.
  • Change your accent every three seconds.
  • If they repeat the order to make sure they have it right, say, "Okay, that'll be $10.99; please pull up to the first window."
  • Ask if you get to keep the pizza box. When they say yes, heave a sigh of relief.
  • Put the accent on the last syllable of "pepperoni." Use the long "i" sound.
  • Imitate the order taker's voice.
  • Ask what topping goes best with well-aged Chardonnay.
  • Start the conversation with "My Call to Pizza Place, Take 1, and. . . action!"
  • Ask if the pizza is organically grown.
  • Be vague in your order.
  • Order a steamed pizza.
  • If any of the above practices are rejected by the order taker, say, in your best pouty voice, "Last guy let me do it."

To see the entire list, go to this website: http://www.jokesplace.com/joke/pizza60.html

Hope you have a laughter-filled day!

The Sport of Shopping

Shopping can be compared to hunting and fishing.  All three are a form of sport.

I had been borrowing my friend's white jean jacket (WJJ) for a couple of years, and I started feeling a little guilty for having it for so long that I started looking for one of my own.  I had not been successful, but decided that it was time to return this much enjoyed jacket to her.

The need to get a new WJJ was even stronger because I had returned the one that I had grown to count on.  A WJJ in my opinion is much more versatile than a plain old blue denim one and it just suits me better.  I was determined to get one of my very own.  The serious hunt was on.

Every store that I went to that would have sold this infamous product were "Sold out" ; or I was told, "We just sold the last one", or "They went so fast".  For those of you that had a WJJ, I envied you.  So I asked some of these sales clerks, "So what time of the year should I come back to get one of these WJJ?".  Sometimes they said "Early spring", sometimes they said "Fall".  Needless to say I was starting to lose hope.

We took a summer trip to the United States, and while in Rapid City, South Dakota, we visited the "Eddie Bauer" store in the Rushmore Mall.  I was excited when I spotted a WJJ on the sales lady.  I asked her, "Do you have any more of those jackets? Like the one you are wearing?"  She replied with, "No, I am sorry, we are all sold out".  She could see my disappointment and responded cheerfully with, "But you can probably find it online.  Here, try mine on for size if you'd like".  She gestured that she was about to remove her WJJ, but I found it would have been very awkward to have taken the shirt off her back.  So I graciously declined her offer.  I left the store disappointed, once again, but now hopeful that maybe I was getting closer to the great catch.

A few days later we stopped at the West Acres Mall in Fargo, North Dakota, and there was an "Eddie Bauer" store there, too.  When I arrived, I asked the sales clerk if they had any more WJJ.  She said they had one, and she searched for it for a minute.  She then declared, "We must have sold it".  She apologized and she too sensed my disappointment.  Another miss.  I left the store empty handed.

We continued to shop in the mall for a bit, and again ended up at the "Eddie Bauer" store.  My husband was trying on some clothes, so I decided to take a look around to see what was on the sales rack.  I found a little blue tank top, that I decided I might buy.  Right before we were going to leave, I decided to check on the clearance rack for any other deals.

Wouldn't you know it?  A single WJJ was waiting there for me on the clearance rack!  It was gleaming white.  In my size!  I mentioned to a different sales clerk that I had been in earlier and was told there were none left.  She replied, "This jacket just came back as a return".  What timing!

As I pulled it off the rack, it seemed like time started going in slow motion.  I was reeling it in.  The feel of this WJJ, the weight of it, the look of it, was more than I had expected.  It was the "perfect catch"!   I pulled it off the hanger, much like a fisherman pulls the hook from the fish.  My heart was doing flips. I put it on, and it fit me perfectly.  It felt like a big hug, this WJJ surrounding me in all it's comfort and glory.  I was elated.  I was smiling ear-to-ear, and I called over to my husband.  "I found my jacket!"  I showed him my new find as I stood proudly.  Much like a hunter or a fisherman with his trophy catch.

No matter what anyone says, shopping is a sport much like hunting and fishing.  The thrill of the hunt, the anticipation of the find, and showing off the results of your efforts is similar in hunting and fishing.  The ammunition or bait for shopping is a good pair of shoes, a keen sense of sight, and a credit card.  Sometimes you do really well, and other times you come home empty handed.  But the stories you will tell!

Do you have any shopping stories like this?  Or are you currently on the hunt?  If so, happy hunting!

Rocky and Trixie

My dog Rocky turned 5 this year.  His sister, Trixie, was a guest at our home one weekend.  Rocky and Trixie haven't seen each other very much since they were little.  It was nice to have two dogs again in the house (my other dog, Gypsy, died in Nov. 2009).  Rocky and Trixie came from the same litter.  They are cockapoos.  Their mom is a black cocker spaniel, and dad is a white poodle.  They are non-shedding and are small to medium sized. Here are some pictures of them - then and now.

Trixie (below) and Rocky at 8 weeks

Trixie (left) and Rocky at 5 years
Trixie loves to be with me all the time, and she waits outside the bathroom door for me.  She likes to find a comfy spot under my bed.  She loves belly rubs and enjoys affection.  She loves to go for walks, too.  I had her running around in our backyard for exercise.  One morning,  I heard her whimpering,  so I went over to see what she wanted.  She was standing by the dog food bowl.  I remember being told that she doesn't like to eat out of the bowl, but prefers it on a carpet or mat. I encouraged her to eat from the bowl.  She attempted to, but then backed off.  She looked at me with her very big, brown eyes, and I could tell she wanted me to move the food from the bowl to the mat.  I put a handful on the mat, and she ate it right away.  She's so funny that way!

Dogs are great pets, and it's always nice to have company for my dog.

Hot in Cleveland - TV Sitcom

I heard about this new sitcom on TV, called, "Hot in Cleveland".  I watched it the other night, and I was laughing out loud.  It stars Valerie Bertinelli and Betty White.   There are three women who were on their way to Paris looking for love, and their plane had an emergency landing in Cleveland Ohio, and they ended up loving it there.  They rented a place from an older woman, Elka (Betty White).  The episode I watched has a hilarious with funny scene at the end, about "going downtown".  Elka and her date had a fight, because he wouldn't "go downtown".  He ended up coming to her door, and told her he was "willing to try going downtown".  The conversation continued and the audience (and myself) were laughing out loud.  It was so funny.  I will be sure to watch it again.

I found a clip on YouTube, called Hot In Cleveland: Sneak Peek.  Go to this link to see more:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ezdQKhHFBmE

To see a news article about 88-year-old Betty White, click on this link:  http://www.ctv.ca/CTVNews/Entertainment/20100725/betty-white-cleveland-100725/

Hot in Cleveland can be seen on Shaw TV in Winnipeg, Canada on Monday nights at 7pm on CTV (Channel 5).  Check your local listings to find out when it's playing in your area.

The Four Ages of Bananahood

I was browsing through Flickr the other day, and I came across a clever photo I wanted to share.  It's a picture that shows the four life stages of a banana - green, ripe, more ripe, and over-ripe. The photographer, "bitrot", strategically poses the bananas on a blue background, and he adds some facial expressions to the bananas.  I was entertained when I read through the information bitrot had posted and some of the comments from others.  The photographer even shows some "behind the scenes" shots on how he did it. Very creative.

The one thing I really like about bananas is when they are really ripe and we make banana bread.  I like banana nut muffins, too.  How do you like your bananas?

Caves, Carvings and Cowboys - Black Hills, South Dakota

My family took a trip to the Black Hills in South Dakota, and I made a music video out of some of the pictures we took.  Click here to see the video on YouTube or go to this link:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HzX6TfLr94s

Black Hills is a great family road trip.  We visited so many places, and had a lot of fun.

The weather was great, and there were some classic sights to see, such as Mount Rushmore.  My highlight was when we went to Wind Cave, and they turned off all the lights.  The dark, damp, blackness was quite remarkable.  The other highlight was the Wildlife Loop in Custer State Park.  The bisons and donkeys were everywhere.

Have a great day!

Einstein - The World's Smartest Bird

"Live in such a way that you would not be ashamed to sell your parrot to the town gossip." -- Will Rogers

I was looking for something for Friday Lite this week, and I came across this video about a talking parrot named Einstein.  I used to have budgies when I was young, and we also had a cockatiel when my kids were little.  I remember trying to get our cockatiel "Scotty" to talk, and he was able to copy some of our sounds. He even learned how to copy the noise the microwave makes when it is done. He used to whistle at me when I walked down the stairs. I love birds, and I found this video on "Einstein the Parrot".  There are a number of videos on YouTube about Einstein, and I found this video to be really entertaining.   I hope you enjoy watching Einstein.  It is a funny and entertaining three minutes.

The Oldest Bloggers - The OGs

The OG's just may be the oldest bloggers on the internet.  OG stands for "Original Grandparents".   Barbara (Cutie), is 93 and her husband Harry (Pop Pop) is 98-years-old.  I saw some clips about the OGs on CNN.com, and I was intrigued.  Barbara and Harrys granddaughters help manage their blog and some of the interesting  posts I saw had to do with, "Ask Grandma Anything", and "Secrets of a 72-year marriage".  This couple is quite sweet, and funny at times.  To be able to share your wisdom and advice to people all over the world in such an innocent way is quite impressive.  They are celebrities in their own right.

You can shop on their site for items like t-shirts, tote bags, mugs, and stickers with a cute picture of the couple in their younger years or a picture of them now.  There is a contact link (if you need to Ask Grandma anything) and you can Register to Stay Up to Date.  The OGs are also on Twitter.

When asked about the secrets of a 72-year marriage, Harry said, "It's a give and take situation.  She takes, and  I give".  Barbara adds, "He thinks".  He then ever so lovingly picks up her hand and kisses it.  I find it so cute.  They live in a retirement home in California.  Check out their blog at http://the-ogs.com for a look at The OGs.

Have a great day!

Strokes of Art

"What art offers is space - a certain breathing room for the spirit." ~John Updike

I often visit CNN's (Cable News Network) online website, and I look for positive, uplifiting news.  I was touched by a health segment, "With Crayons, Brushes and an Escape From Alzheimer's".  I work with older adults, and this video hilights an art program for people living with Alzheimer's, called, "Arts 4 Alzheimer's".  The video interviews Bill and Carol Bates, who have been married for 57 years.  They have known each other since she was 12.  The bond between them is very special.  I particularly found it amusing where he talks about how she tells him how great he is and she lovingly grabs his neck, like she was going to strangle him.  You can just feel the love.

Art is a great activity for the people living with Alzheimer's.  The participants are able to enjoy the "here and now".  Tania, one of the volunteers comments that her time spent with this program is a "labour of love".  The simple, basic activity of art is something that people of all ages can enjoy.  I know as a child, art class in school was fun. As we age, we often don't have the time for leisurely activities like art, until we are older and our children are grown, or we are retired.  The participants in the Arts 4 Alzheimer's program look happy and content and they appear to be doing something enjoyable and worthwhile.   I myself have dabbled in  art, and I really enjoyed it.  I wish to get back to it again, hopefully before I'm elderly.

Would You Like to Dance?

"Dance like no one is watching. Sing like no one is listening. Love like you've never been hurt and live like it's heaven on Earth."  — Mark Twain

When was the last time you danced? I remember when I was young and I danced at the local clubs every weekend. As a young child, I remember dancing to music at the estate that my Grandparents were caretakers for.  My daughter takes dance lessons.  Hip Hop is a popular form of dance among the younger crowd.  I even took some belly dance lessons a couple years back.  Line dancing is fun, too.

A dream of mine had been to take dance lessons with my husband.  For years I had suggested it, and finally we took some lessons through one of our community clubs.  We learned how to do the two-step, the slow fox trot and the old-time waltz.  Dance lessons are a great way to spend some time together with your significant other.  It's a great way to get out, and get exercise.  Learning something new is always good for you, too.

These are some ways to put dance into your life:

1.  Put on some of your favourite upbeat music, pull the drapes, and let the music move you.  (It's best to do this when no one else is around, or else your family will think you're nuts).

2.  Go to a wedding, anniversary or fundraiser social event.  It's always fun to celebrate and dance at these events with family and friends.
3.  Take dance lessons.  There are different kinds of dance lessons, talk to your friends and get ideas.

4.  Go to a club.  You can dance into the early hours of the morning, with like-minded folks.

Whatever you choose, do it with a mission to dance the night away.  The last time I danced (in public) was at my brother's wedding, and we had a great time.  My brother can sure break-a-leg on the dance floor!

Have a great day!

Despicable Me Movie Review

"Despicable Me" is a great family movie.  I went to this movie with my husband and two kids while we were on vacation in the Black Hills, South Dakota. It's a story about a Super Villian named Gru, who wants to steal the moon.  Part of his plan involves adopting three little orphaned girls - Margo, Edith and Agnes.  The girls are all so sweet, however, the youngest, Agnes, stands out.  She loves unicorns, and some of the cutest, memorable scenes involve her.

Grus little helpers, his "minions", are yellow, pill-shaped creatures that have their own language.  These minions have some of the funniest scenes in the movie.  Grus scary-looking dog also offers some entertainment.  The other main character in the movie is "Vector", another villian who Gru wants to outdo.

Eventually, the girls capture the heart of evil Gru, and they are taken on some great adventures.  Gru turns out to be a loving, fatherly figure.  This is a movie that will have you laughing and it will also touch your heart.

For some great scenes with Agnes, click here.  For the official movie trailer, click here.  The movie is also available in 3-D.  Rated PG for some scary scenes.

Exercise - A Family Affair

The other evening, my entire family made plans to go to our local gym (GoodLife Fitness).  My husband and I have been a member for a couple years.  My son, being 14, was able to get a free membership for the summer. This offer is available to teens aged 14-17 years.  There is a form you have to complete online, and you make an appointment so that your teen can go through an orientation.  My daughter, being 12, is not eligible for this membership.  For $10, she can go as a guest with a paying member (me).

We used the elliptical, the treadmill, the resistance training weights, the mats, the medicine balls, the bosu balls, the exercise balls and the stretching machine.  I also saw my husband and son go over to the free weights section.  My daughter was able to enjoy the electric massage chair.

I brought my earbuds, and while I was doing my cardio workout, I watched an interesting program on the television.  I was able to watch my kids "compete" on the treadmill.  When does sibling rivalry ever end?

All-in-all, it was a great hour spent with my family, while we were being active and taking care of ourselves.    What does your family do for family fun and exercise?

Have a good day!

10 Quick and Easy Ways to Lose Weight

For Friday Lite, I thought I'd share some quick and easy tips for how you can easily lose a few pounds.  Here's my top ten:

1.  LMAO (laugh my ass off) is a great way to reduce weight in the hindquarters.

2.  When eating donuts - only eat the center part.

3.  Eat that prime rib roast with a straw.

4.  Ladies - drop 5 lbs. instantly! Let go of your purse.

5.  Instead of carrying your laptop around - start carrying your desktop PC.

6.  Remove the wheels from your grocery cart.

7.  Use Superglue as lip gloss.

8.  Weigh yourself with only one foot on the scale.

9.  Hang your bikini on the refrigerator.... definitely don't do that if you are a guy.

10.  Eat your food with one chopstick.

Free Hugs

A friend who recently moved to North West Territories shared a great YouTube video.  It's called, "Free Hugs in Sondrio, Italy".   I watched it and was quite entertained and I enjoyed it a lot.  I also noticed that there are many other Free Hugs videos from all over the world.  It goes to show how people enjoy hugs and that we can be kind to each other.  In the video I am featuring here, it is great to see how people respond.  Notice the smiles on the people's faces.  Hugs are enjoyed by all ages - kids and seniors, too.

Click on this link to see this inspirational, touching video. The music choice is great, too.

Hugs to you!

Fun With Anagrams

Anagram Definition:  A word or phrase formed by rearranging the letters of another word or phrase.

Did you know that parliament is an anagram of partial men? Or, Clint Eastwood an anagram of Old West Action? Someone once said, "All the life's wisdom can be found in anagrams. Anagrams never lie." Here is your chance to discover the wisdom of anagrams. -- Internet Anagram Server

I found this neat website, where you take a name, title or phrase, and plug it into the Get Anagrams box.  I typed in the title, On the Bright Side, and it produced over 66,000 results.  One of them was, Disrobe the Night.  I tried my name, too.  It came up with over 5,500 options.  All the words don't make sense however, so you can go to the Advanced search, and fine tune your results.  Go to Internet Anagram Server for more information.

Have fun, and see what you can come up with.

Newly Discovered Family Member

"A cousin is a sister you never had."--Anonymous

Back in July 2007,  I received an email from my Dad. He told me about a cousin that I didn't know I had.  My Uncle (my Dad's brother) had fathered a child when he was about 18 years old, and both he and the  birth mother decided to give up this baby girl for adoption.  MaryAnne started seeking out her birth father, and found out that he had died only a couple years prior to her looking for him.  She found his brother, (my Dad), and that's how it all began.

MaryAnne and I have developed a special bond over the last three years.  MaryAnne and her husband Randy were over for dinner the other night.  The resemblance to my Uncle is so strong. I am happy to have her in my life.  Having a newly-found "sister-cousin" has been very special.  She lives only about 45 minutes away, in a small town.  She's only a couple years younger than me.

I am sad when I think about all the years that we lost that we could have had together, but I am grateful that she has found me.  I treasure our relationship and consider it a special gift.  I don't have any blood relatives in the city where I live, so she's the closest relative to me at this time.  We share a bond that is very special.  She is a wonderful person, and I love her. She's funny (just like her Dad was) and she's kind and caring.  She gives the most wonderful hugs, too.

We hear about long-lost family members reuniting with their families on TV.  This time it was real for me.  She has been a blessing in our lives.

Cousins by blood but friends by choice!

Have a wonderful day!

Swimming With the Dolphins

In February 2010, I had the pleasure of swimming with the dolphins in Cozumel, Mexico. I had my family with me. This was one of the items on my "bucket list".  Now I know not everyone can afford to do something like this (it's not cheap) and we certainly had to budget for it.

The dolphin is a beautiful mammal that lives in salt water.  They can be trained to do tricks, and they remind me a lot of a dog.  Their skin is very smooth, and they are very gentle, smart and strong creatures.  I felt the power of their strength when they lifted me up out of the water.  This was an exhilarating experience.  At one point I had the male dolphin laying in my arms.  He felt so big, and kind, and powerful.  To hold this magnificent creature in my arms was quite a special moment.  We have lots of pictures, and we purchased a DVD of our family experience.

Dolphins are a life-saver, and have been known to save the lives of humans and other creatures when under attack from sharks.  One of the tricks the dolphins did in Cozumel was "pull us in".  One dolphin on either side of us, and we held onto their fins.  This is a typical rescue maneuver.

If you ever get a chance to swim with the dolphins, I would say give it a try.  They are wonderful creatures that will astound you.  They are very friendly and gentle.

Have a great day!

Black Hills Sunset

"At sunset, Nature is painting for us... day after day... pictures of infinite beauty."--John Rusklin

This summer we took a trip down to the Black Hills in South Dakota.  We stopped at a lookout, and found this great spot over a lake.  The sun was setting, and the reflection of the lake was a perfect backdrop for a romantic silhouette of my husband and I.  My son took the shot.

He and his sister enjoyed throwing rocks into the water, while we enjoyed the moment.  (I think Dad enjoyed throwing some rocks, too!)

Peace.

It's Great to be Canadian, Eh?

Isn't it great?  I found this joke for Friday Lite.  Hope you enjoy!

A Canadian Tale

Once upon a time the Canadian Government had a vast scrap yard in the middle of nowhere. The Government said, "Someone may steal from the scrap yard at night." So they created a night watchman position and hired a person (bilingual, naturally) for the job. Then the Government said, "How can the watchman do his job without instruction?" So they created a Planning Department and hired two people; one person to write the job description and one person to do time studies.

Then the Government said, "How will we know the night watchman is performing the tasks correctly?" So they created a Quality Control department and hired two people; one to do the studies and one to write the reports.

Then the Government said, "How are these people going to get paid?" So they created the following positions: a Time Keeper and a Payroll Officer; then hired two more people to assist.

Then the Government said, "Who will be accountable for all of these people?" So they created an Administrative Section and hired three people: an Administrative Officer, an Assistant Administrative Officer and a Legal Secretary.

Then the Government said, "We have had this organization in operation for only one year and we are $18,000 over budget; we must cutback our overall costs."

So they laid off the night watchman.

The Glory of Success

"If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you."
-- Anonymous

What is success, seriously?  Success is achieving a goal that you've been working on.  It's getting it right, after many times of getting it wrong.  It's a journey, not a destination.

I'll share a little personal story.  Over the last year and a half, I have been working on getting a new job.  I had been in my current position for 10 years, and it was time for me to move on.  I had applied for many jobs, had many interviews, but nothing seemed to "fit" right with me.  I was starting to get discouraged, but I persisted.  My family and friends encouraged me to keep going, providing me with lots of support.
I was on the roller coaster of life, lots of ups and downs.  They were there every step of the way. Finally, it all paid off.  I have found a new job, and I consider this a success.  My "Career Shift" success.

The moral of this story is that it takes a lot of hard work, persistence, and focussing on your goals to get to where you want to be.  The journey of success continues, and it often pays off to do your very best.  Being grateful for your accomplishments and realized goals keeps you on the track of continued success.  This is a glorious feeling and it is important to celebrate these times in our lives.

I hope you feel successful in your life, and if you are working on new goals and accomplishments, I wish that all the support and encouragement you need comes your way to help you keep focussed and positive.

Sincerely,

How to Listen So You Mean It

Did you know that the words Listen and Silent have the same letters?

To be a good listener, means you have to be silent at times when the person you are listening to is speaking.  To reassure your speaker, it is good to nod, or say, "uh huh", or to paraphrase what they are saying when they pause for a break.  The periods of silence are good, as it allows you and the speaker to reflect on what has been said, and to process a response or to formulate words for the next train of thought.

Enjoy the exchange of ideas, feelings and stories, with silence.  That's what makes you a good listener.

Cheers!

Super Size Me - A Refresher

The kids and I recently watched Super Size Me (2004 rated PG-13) for the second time.  The first time we watched it was quite a few years ago, when it first came out.  This documentary is so fascinating, that it actually changed the way my family views fast food.

Here's a description of the movie:

"Super Size Me" is one man's journey into the world of weight gain, health problems and fast food. It's an examination of the American way of life and how we are eating ourselves to death. Filmmaker Morgan Spurlock unravels the American obesity epidemic by interviewing experts nationwide and by subjecting himself to a 'McDonald's only' diet for thirty days straight. His Sundance award-winning feature is as entertaining as it horrifying as it dives into corporate responsibility, nutritional education, school lunch programs and how we as a nation are eating ourselves to death."

I believe that in terms of food, everything is okay, as long as it's in moderation.  In terms of a healthy diet, the Canada Food Guide recommends that we eat a balanced diet, and you can create your own food guide on the website, Eating Well with Canada's Food Guide.  I live with two teenagers, and they have both learned a lot about healthy eating at school, and have helped us learn about healthier choices at home and when we go out.  My son is known as the "trans fat" police at our home, and both my son and daughter are reading food labels whenever they can.

Healthy eating is a lifestyle choice.  Don't get me wrong, I still enjoy potato chips (low salt) and ice cream every once in awhile.  My husband likes to cook, and he is mindful of healthier choices as well.  We have been forced into it, because our kids wouldn't have it any other way.  We limit our visits to fast food places (like Subway, Wendy's and Tim Horton's) once weekly.

If you want to see Super Size Me for the first time, or want a refresher, you can rent it from the movie store, or you can download it for free, here.

Have a healthy day!

Don't Copy Me!

Kids are so funny.  We were looking through some of our old family videos, and we found this clip of my daughter singing.  My son was copying her and she was getting so mad.  She's 2 and he's almost 5.  Here's the YouTube video.  Click on the arrow to see my daughter singing Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star

A Love Story

“A great book should leave you with many experiences, and slightly exhausted. You should live several lives while reading it.” - William Styron

I just finished reading a book called, "Chosen by a Horse" by Susan Richards.  It was very easy to read, and I could really identify with it.  It reminded me of myself.  It's a story of a middle-aged social worker who loves horses.  She rescues a horse, that had chosen to be with her.  The writer's troubled past is mirrored in the horse's past, and the experience with the horse teaches her how to love again.  It was a pleasure to read and I recommend it to all those who love nature and have a compassionate heart.

Have a wonderful day!

Top 10 Posts of the First 100

Today we celebrate post number "100" On the Bright Side Blog.  What is in a number?  100 is quite a feat if you reach it in people years.  It's a Century.   It's a great mark to get when you are writing an exam.  100 is the number of tiles in a standard Scrabble set.  In Roman numerals, 100 is the letter C, for Centum.  To celebrate this 100th post, I thought it would be fitting to do a top 10 list of my favourite blogs.  These are blogs that I felt excited about creating, ones that were usually days in the making, and most heartfelt.  These are the ones that have generated interest and comments from my readers.  I'll list them here in no particular order.  If your favourite has been left out, please let me know.

The Top 10, in no particular order are (click on the link to see the post):

Three Bird Smiley Face

For Friday Lite, I wanted to share with you an incredible picture I found on the internet.  It's called the"Three Bird Smiley Face".

Birds often fly in groups, and these birds were captured at a moment where their formation looks like a smiley face.  The photographer was in the right place at the right time. Beautiful sunset as well.  Apparently this is a one in a million shot. Photoshopped or not, it still made me smile, how about you?

Live Like You've Won the Lottery

My husband and I used to buy lottery tickets faithfully, every year.  We had a "subscription" and we would use the same numbers every draw, twice weekly.  We spent hundreds, maybe even thousands on lottery tickets.  Back then, we thought winning the lottery would make us happier.  Promises of, "It only takes one ticket!" and, "Live your dreams to the Max" are everywhere.

On the bottom of the lottery website, there is a disclaimer:

"Although “good luck” and “best of luck” are common expressions of goodwill, the idea of “lucky numbers” is a myth. Lottery games are games of chance, and the outcome is entirely random. So, don’t overspend on lottery tickets, thinking there is some way to “beat the system”. There isn’t. It only takes one ticket to win, and buying hundreds won’t substantially change your odds of winning."

The odds of winning the lottery are so low, that I have decided to start living my life now like I have already won the lottery.  When I think about how my life would be if I won BIG, I think about travelling, living in a nice house, having nice things around me, and spending more time on leisure activities.  Studies have shown that people who win the lottery still "work", and find purpose in their lives.  Their work is usually related to charity, or in a volunteer capacity.

There is a TLC TV show called, "The Lottery Changed My Life".  There are stories about real people, and they talk about how their life changed since winning big.  Some people manage their money real well, others blow it.

What I want people to know is that it's okay to have dreams, like winning the lottery, but in the meantime, don't waste your time "waiting to win big".  Live like you've won the lottery already.  Do things (on a smaller scale) that you would do if you did win big. Put some thought into that, and you'll be richer for it.  I know I am richer for the fact that I don't buy lottery tickets any more, and I am living my life to the fullest.

Have a rich and rewarding day!
