Is Your Glass Half Full?

OPTIMISM as defined by The Foolish Dictionary, Online Edition:
"A cheerful frame of mind that enables a tea-kettle to sing, though in hot water up to its nose."

I found this quick quiz, called How Optimistic Are You?  It takes just a couple minutes, and there are 9 questions.  I was quite intrigued by my results - "Sunshine with Patchy Fog".   I've always considered myself to be optimistic, and I try to have a balanced outlook on life.  When you think about pessimism and optimism, where do you see yourself on the continuum?  The quiz that I took, had four categories, all referring to weather.  Thunderstorms, Scattered Showers, Bright Sunshine, and the one I mentioned previously Sunshine with Patchy Fog were the four areas that one could fit into.  Try the quiz and see where you fit in.

I find that an optimistic outlook, seeing the "glass half full", helps get me through my days, especially when things are particularly tough.  Life isn't always easy, and it really helps to see the positive side.  I know when I am around pessimistic people, I feel the urge to help them see the up-side of things.  When it's raining, and they complain about the miserable weather, I try to add something positive, like, "Well, the plants needed it and it will wash away all the dirt".  I try to spread joy whenever I can, and try to help people see the brighter side of life.

How do you see the glass?

Here's a very optimistic perspective:  It is always full.  It may be filled with 50% of water and 50% of air, or any variation of competing percentages, but it is always full of something even if it looks empty as it could be FULL of air.- WikiAnswers.

Peace of Mind

"peace.  it does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble or hard work.  it means to be in the midst of those things and still be calm in your heart." (unknown)

Peace of mind is the absence of mental stress or anxiety.  I quite admire those who are able to live their lives in a peaceful state (please identify yourselves!).  I was researching 'inner peace" and I found a brief article on Wikipedia that was really good. I agree that "peace of mind is generally associated with bliss and happiness".  Then I started looking up "inner peace" and found an article by a great author, Susan Jeffers.  Her article is called, Nine Ways to Find Peace of Mind.  Here is her advice, summarized:

1.  Un-set your heart.  This means let go of how you want it all to be.  Let go of control.

2.  Create a "wondering" life instead of a "hoping" life.  Replace those thoughts of "I hope" with "I wonder".

3.  Choose the path of trust.  Believe that no matter what happens in your life or in this world, you will have the inner strength to create something good from it all.

4.  Increase your inner sense of power.  Believe that whatever happens to you or in this world, you will be able to handle it.

5.  Collect Heroes. These are people who have overcome adversity in their lives and created good in the world.  Example:  Christopher Reeves, Michael J. Fox.  Learn from them.  Let them lead by example.

6.  Focus on the learning.  You can learn from and find strength from anything that happens to you.

7.  Embrace the thought, "It's all happening perfectly".  Look for the good in any situation that life hands us.

8.  Focus on the blessings.  Find the beauty and wonder in those things we generally take for granted (ie. a shower or a great meal).

9.  Get involved.  Keep repeating to yourself: "My life has meaning and I will do whatever I can to make this a better world."  Volunteer or help others.

Powerful words of wisdom and great reinforcement for someone who is pursuing inner peace and happiness.  Sometimes it's difficult to focus on the positive, but it certainly helps when we can.  In my opinion, it can be done with some effort and reminders.

Have a peaceful day!

Billboard Advice

While travelling through North Dakota, I came across three thought-provoking billboards.  The first said, "Be Grateful".  The second said, "Be Kind" and the third said, "Be Polite".  I am very curious to find out who pays for these billboards.  These signs were in and around the Fargo area.

I did a bit of research, and all I could find was a reference in Wikipedia, in the category, Billboard.  It states: "Non-commercial advertisement is used around the world by governments and non-profit organisations to obtain donations, volunteer support or change consumer behavior".  There is a picture of a billboard, that says "Smile".  I read on someone else's blog that there is a sign that says "Smile".  I guess I missed that one.

This got me thinking about how this kind of "advising" is so positive and uplifting.  I am wondering what other people make of these billboards.  For those of us who appreciate the reminders to stay focussed on the positive, or the bright side of life, this is a great tool to help make the community a better place.  On the other hand, it's very odd to see these signs amongst all kinds of advertising for hotels, restaurants and local attractions.  They seem quite out of place, therefore, they stand out.  They are hard to miss.

Someone had a good idea and thought it might plant some seeds of happiness and kindness to the travellers who happen upon these signs.  Funny how in this day and age, we need someone telling us what to do, and how to act, in the ethical and moral sense.  I appreciate the signs, and it does make me stop to think about what I am grateful for, and how I can be kind and polite.

When you are travelling, take note of the signs that stand out, and hopefully they are good ones!

Have a grateful, polite and kind day!

Shop and Give

I saw a story on CNN the other day, that inspired me to write about companies that are generous and help others in need.  The shoe company, TOMS, sells shoes and boots for men, women and youth.  They sell "Tiny Toms" for young children, every day shoes, and they even have "wedding" shoes.  For every pair of shoes they sell, they will donate a pair of shoes to a child who is in need.  Their most recent project is in Haiti.  They have an online store, and I was browsing through their website, and I felt a good feeling as I looked at the pictures of people who wear the shoes and send in their photos and stories.  For the consumer who buys TOMS shoes, they are helping a child in need as well.  TOMS calls it their "One for One" program.  I am sure there are many other companies out there that do good for those less fortunate, and I felt that TOMS is a noteworthy company that should be recognized as such.  So far, they have given over 600,000 shoes to children in need.

One of the giant corporate contributors to our society in Canada is Wal-Mart.  Believe it or not, Wal-Mart donated and raised a record $25 million in 2009.  "At Walmart Canada, corporate social responsibility is part of our DNA," said David Cheesewright, President and CEO of Walmart Canada. "We are committed to making a positive difference in the communities where we do business."  When I shop at Wal-Mart, I can be assured that my purchases are also helping those in need, right here in Canada.

A big boquet goes out to those companies that help their local communities and the world.  Keep up the good work!

Have a wonderful day!

A Woman's Place is in the Mall

"Whoever said money can't buy happiness simply didn't know where to go shopping." ~Bo Derek

When I was younger, my mother and I used to go out shopping together, and this was a time that we bonded doing something that we both loved.  My mother would watch me trying on new clothes, or we would watch each other get excited about finding something that we wanted.  My mom also told me that her mother used to take her to downtown Toronto, and they would go shopping together when she was young.

Now I find myself taking my daughter out shopping.  This is a time when we bond, and we share a common interest.  It is especially fun when the two of us can go on a weekend get-away, and go somewhere that is different.  When you go to stores that aren't found in your local community, it's fun because you get to see different things.

There is a term used for the feeling you get when you go shopping.  It's called, Retail therapy.  I used to go shopping when I felt down, and if I bought something new it would cheer me up.  It's the fun of it, getting out with the public, stimulating your senses with new smells, textures, colours, bright lights, music.  It's especially thrilling when you find that item that you've been looking for, and so desperately "need".  I know for myself, I usually feel uplifted and happier after I have been out shopping, whether I buy something or not (just be careful of the dangers of buyer's remorse -when you spend too much money!).

I also enjoy reading books by Sophie Kinsella.  She has a Shopaholic Seriers, and the first book is called, Confessions of a Shopaholic.  The storylines are quite funny, and it's entertaining to go on an adventure of shopping with Becky.  The first two books were made into a movie, called, Confessions of a Shopaholic.  See the movie trailer here

If you are feeling down, and want a lift, it's always fun to go out shopping, especially to a mall (even if you don't buy something).  It's nice to treat yourself and make yourself feel special.  Buying something for someone else is also rewarding.   Giving is always a good thing!

Happy shopping!

Do Your Kids A Favour - Give them Chores

"I like hugs and I like kisses; But what I really love is help with the dishes!" -Author Unknown

I have two teenagers, and since they were young, my husband and I have expected them to help with chores around the house.  Dishes, cleaning up the yard, putting out the recycling and feeding the dog are examples of jobs that they share responsibilities for.  I came across this article, called, Kids who help with chores become successful adults, and I really like how it puts into words what I have felt all along about how important it is for kids to help with household tasks.  When parents put expectations on their kids to do chores, research at the University of Minnesota has shown that it teaches kids "responsibility, competence, self-reliance and self-worth".  The article also gives parents tips on how to go about teaching their kids how to participate in these "helping tasks" and they stress it's important to start them young - as early as three years of age!

Our kids have now built their chores into their routines.  Still, at times, we need to remind them to do them, but it usually gets done.  According to the article, it sounds like they can start doing more, as it's important to add more responsibilities as they mature.

Lighten the load, and do your kids a favour. Reduce the risk of depression. Give them more chores!  Remember to praise a lot, too.  It's all good for their development and helping them grow into responsible, happy adults.

Have a great day!

The Pleasure of Music

"Music produces a kind of pleasure which human nature cannot do without." - Confucius

Music is a very big part of our life.  Music can be used to help us relax, or it can help us get motivated.  There are many types of music, and such a variety of artists that there is something for everyone.  I hear music when I am waiting in the doctor's office.  I see people with their ear buds on at the gym.  Music is everywhere.

Both of my children take music lessons.  My daughter takes piano and my son takes piano and percussion (drums) lessons.  Our home is usually filled with some kind of music.  Whether it's my kids taking their lessons or practicing on the piano or drum set.  The radio is on oftentimes, and the music is a nice background when we are getting ready in the mornings.  I have an iPod docking station in my bedroom, and I can download hundreds of songs onto my iPod and play whatever music I am in the mood for.  I also have a lot of music on my BlackBerry.  I can listen to the music when I am in my car, or when I am on the go.  My daughter prefers top 40 tunes right now, and we often have the house full of uplifting, pop music.  The rhythm and melodies in our home are a pleasure to hear.

TV also has some muscial programs and channels that are enjoyable to watch.  American Idol, Canadian Idol and Glee are fun programs to watch.  The talented artists practice and produce music that appeals to many people.  There are also TV channels devoted solely music and the artists, such as MuchMusic and MTV.

I have my own favourite music to listen to, depending on my mood.  I like a lot of the top 40 pop songs, and I enjoy it in the mornings when I am getting ready for my day because it puts me in a good mood for going to work.  If I want to wind down, relax or read, I'll put on some relaxing, soothing sounds. I enjoy jazz, classical and some of my favourite artists include Madonna, Michael Buble, Josh Groban and the Black Eyed Peas.  Whenever I have company over, I enjoy setting the mood with music.

No matter what kind of music you enjoy, there is always pleasure felt when you are able to listen to your favourite songs.

Have a wonderful, music-filled day!

Lost, Found and Rewarded

Have you ever lost something and then have someone return it to you?  Have you ever found something and been able to return it to someone?  My husband rides his bike to work most days, and he often finds things in his travels.  His most recent finding was a cell phone.  He looked in the contacts, and tried to call the "home" number, but there was no answer.  Shortly after, the cell phone rang, and it turned out it was the owner.  He arranged to return the phone to its rightful owner, and he was pleasantly surprised with a $20 reward.  It is so nice to get a reward for helping someone get something back that they thought they may have lost for good.

Last year, I saw a dog running across the street in our neighbourhood.  Being a dog-owner myself, I could only imagine the worst, if this dog was not brought back home to safety.  I stopped my car, assessed that this dog was friendly, and enticed this large, happy, dog into my back seat.  Fortunately this dog had on a name tag with his home address.  I was able to drive this dog back to his home, and ensure he was safe again.  That evening, I had a knock on my front door, and the owners gave me a gift of a bottle of wine.  That was an unexpected reward and very much appreciated.

If you have lost or found something, there are great websites you can go to to find out if you can locate your item or return the item to its rightful owner.

A big boquet goes out to anyone who has ever found something and returned it, and to those who have offered rewards or gifts/letters/words of appreciation to those who have returned their lost items.  It makes the world we live in a happier one.

Cheers!

Ruby Ellenby is a three-year-old girl that has an interest in photography and she in fact, has her own website and has had her artwork displayed at a San Francisco restaurant, Moshi Moshi.  She is very happy to see her pictures up on the walls of the restaurant.  Her parents are supportive and encouraging, and they are photographers themselves.  It is quite impressive to see how Ruby's parents are supporting Ruby in her endeavours, and are nurturing this young, aspiring artist to make a name for herself at such a young age.  She picked up a digital camera six months prior and hasn't put it down since. The picture of the leaf shown here is one of Ruby's, and I received permission from her parents to use it in this post.  All of Ruby's pictures are taken from the perspective of a small person, and it is actually quite cute to see what kinds of things she finds worthy of capturing in a photo.  The letter "S" for example, or a headlight of a motorcycle.  A lot of the pictures also make one wonder, "What is that?"  The pictures are all quite different and beautiful in their own, unique way.

I reviewed some of the internet articles written about Ruby and her photography, and I found a video and this quote in an article on Crave;

Life. Plain and Simple.

Simple living is the opposite of complicated living.  I often yearn for the days when life used to be simple.  I have three books written by Elaine St. James.  The titles of these books are:  "Simplify Your Life", "Living the Simple Life", and "Simplify Your Life with Kids".  St. James engages the reader to consider that we will be happier if we pare down and cut out the things that aren't necessary.  Anyone searching for a refreshing remedy to the frenzied pace of today's world will find solutions within the pages of  these "Simplify" books.

I have learned how to make some of my life easier and simpler, by just saying "no" to some things.  I have two kids, who like to get involved in extra-curricular activities.  I limit them each to three things.  Out of these three things, I make sure that the activities are convenient in terms of timing, and in terms of location.  For example, the piano teacher comes to our home, and the percussion teacher is just across the street.  The dance studio is just down the street.  The basketball practice is usually not too far from home.

I try not to schedule too many things on the weekends, and I ensure that we have some down time as a family.  Although life is oftentimes speeding along at a  hectic pace (especially in May and June), we have been able to slow it down and make it easier for us.  I have learned how to do things a little differently.  For example, I only pick up the mail from the mail box on Mondays and Thursdays.  I have only two days to deal with the mail.  I have also worked very hard at eliminating all junk mail (what a job!) and I got rid of a lot of our credit cards we weren't using.  I am always looking for ways to make life more simple, and stress-free.

What do you do to help make your life simpler and more stress-free?

Warm regards,

Wedding Anniversaries - A Time to Celebrate

"For two people in a marriage to live together day after day is unquestionably the one miracle the Vatican has overlooked." - Bill Cosby

Today my husband and I celebrate 20 years of marriage. We have actually been celebrating since February of this year, when we went on a Caribbean Cruise with a large group - including all of his family!  This past weekend, we went to a dinner theatre, and we spent the evening with another couple.  We went to Celebrations, and we saw the production called, "Greased".  It was a lot of fun, and it included songs from the movie Grease, plus a lot of other oldies.  There was humour, fun, and romance.  My husband and I were up on stage, with a number of other couples, celebrating their anniversaries that night as well.  There was a couple who were married for 45 years (that's more than twice as long as us!).  Another man got on his hands and knees and bowed to the husband.  The Celebrations staff asked the husband, "What is the secret to staying together so long?", and he said, "Just don't say too much".  The audience roared with laugher.  The wife was asked the same question, and she said the key to a long marriage is to "Love and forgive".  These were wise words coming from people who had been together a long time.

I am blessed with a happy marriage, and I am fortunate to be where I am today.  I think it's important to celebrate marriage more often than once a year.  Take the time to be thankful for what you have together.  I am in the process of planning a 50th Wedding Anniversary party for my in-laws. I told them that I want to organize a party for them that will include dancing and celebrations.  I told them that they deserve it.  They are hoping to have about 70 people there to share their Golden Anniversary with.

As you look at your own life, and those around you that are celebrating milestones in their relationships and marriages, be thankful for those loving relationships.  They are the foundations of families, and they are the models for our children and grandchildren.

"Chains do not hold a marriage together. It is threads, hundreds of tiny threads which sew people together through the years."  - Simone Signoret

Name Search - You May Surprise Yourself!

For fun the other day, I searched my name (married) and then I searched my maiden name.  I was so surprised to find a video that was from 1986!  I was in the Miss Canada pageant that year, and there is a video on Youtube.com of the opening ceremonies that I was in.  I could spot myself in a couple of different scenes.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dgNzOCdvs64

It's amazing how something from 24 years ago ends up on the internet!  It was before the personal computers and internet age, and I never dreamed this this would be on Youtube!  You never know when your past will pop up, or where.  I was also surpised to see my name on a list on a website called, Pageantopolis.  http://www.pageantopolis.com/international/canada_1980s.htm

From Wikipedia:

"Miss Canada was popular in 1970s, with up to 5 million viewers, but declined in the 1980s, until it was cancelled. Producers of the show cited mounting production costs, as the reason for cancellation, along with the absence of host Jim Perry, who went into semi-retirement after the 1991 pageant. The last winner was Miss Canada 1992 Nicole Dunsdon from British Columbia."

It's fun to search and find out who else shares your name, what they do, where they live, etc. You may also be pleasantly surprised and find a little trip down memory lane.  Finding this video, reminded me of the experience I had in the Miss Canada pageant.  Participating in the competition was quite remarkable and it made me feel like a celebrity.  I know people have strong opinions on  pageants (esp. women's groups who think pageants are degrading to women), but I also know they have changed a lot since I was in the Miss Canada Pageant (a scholarship competition).  Now there is a Miss Universe Canada pageant, check it out at:  http://www.beautiesofcanada.com/

Search your name (and maiden name if you're a woman) and where you live(d) and see what you come up with.  You may be surprised!  Let me know what you find.

Have a fantastic day!

Study Finds Internet Use Makes Us Happier

"Give a person a fish and you feed them for a day; teach that person to use the Internet and they won't bother you for weeks. ~Author Unknown"

There has been a new Bristish study released (May 2010) that reports that the internet makes us happy.  This article, Internet Use Makes Us Happier, reveals that it is actually making women happier then men!  Go figure.  I can honestly say, that from a woman's perspective, I definitely have a happier life because of my computer.  I can connect with my friends, I can research health topics, I can plan events, I can find answers to almost anything with a click of the mouse.  It helps keep my "home life organized".  I consider myself smart enough to wade through the information and take what I like and discard which is not fitting.

Here's an excerpt from the article noted above:
"Overall, the study found that access to the Internet leads people to feel better about their lives. "Put simply, people with IT access are more satisfied with life even when taking account of income," said Michael Willmott, the social scientist who authored the study, at a press conference. "Our analysis suggests that IT has an enabling and empowering role in people's lives, by increasing their sense of freedom and control, which has a positive impact on well-being or happiness." "

I know for sure that not only has the internet increased my sense of well-being, but so has my blackberry.  When I look at my kids with their iPod touches, I see that it has brought increased levels of happiness to them, too.  My husband uses technology not only at home, but work too. He always talks about how his boss wants the very best for their lab.  Technology (if used right, in moderation), can be a great tool for life. Any new technology that is introduced has the potential to make life better and ultimately, happier.

The Gross National Happiness index (vs. GDP) is something new that I just heard about, and I am happy to learn about (pun intended!).   Some countries look beyond the Gross National Product, and look at measuring quality of life or social progress in more holistic and psychological terms.  If more people had access to computers (esp. women!) it would make a happier world.

Excuse me, but I have to go now and do some surfing and connecting with others on the internet!

Have a great day!

An Acrostic Poem: Springtime

Smelling the fragrant tree blossoms in the air
Pink and white petals lifted off the trees by the breeze
Radiant sunshine heats up my skin
Insects and flies buzzing by as I relax on my swing
Noise from the breeze rustling through the newly formed leaves in the trees
Green grass speckled with white and pink petals
The birds are chirping and singing and their babies are hungry
I hear birds wings fluttering as they fly by me
My beloved dog, asleep at my feet
Enjoying springtime outside on my swing.

© Angela G. Gentile, 2010

An acrostic poem is very easy to write.  As I was sitting outside on a beautiful sunny, warm day, I was taking note of all the delightful things around me and decided to write a poem about SPRINGTIME.  The simplest way to write a poem is to do an acrostic poem.  You start by putting all the letters that spell your subject (could be any) down the side of your page.  Then you go back to each letter and think of a word, phrase or sentence that starts with that letter that relates to your subject.  Then voila - you have a poem.  I challenge you to write one.  You just may surprise yourself!

Have a creative, wonderful day!

How's Your Mojo?

I have lots of links in this post, just like the links on the chain in this picture.

How's your mojo these days?  Mojo is that personal magnetism, charm and sex appeal that we all have in varying degrees. It's that positivity, that soul or life-force that we all crave.  Some have it more than others.  Some have it, then lose it and have to find it again.  Think Austin Powers

When I watched the movie,  "My Life in Ruins" (2009) starring Nia Vardalos, it was entertaining to see how her somewhat bored character, Georgia, was able to search for and find her "kefi" (Greek for mojo).  The love stories that were threaded throughout the movie were fun to watch and there were very touching moments that made this movie quite endearing.

I found this link on the internet, called, "How to Get Your Mojo Working".  Primarily written for the single guy looking to improve his love life, but I think everyone can get something out of it.

Here's a man's perspective on mojo that I found interesting, Get Your Mojo Back, or Else...  I like his perspective on categories and sub-categories of mojo.

Here's something for the ladies:  Women:  How to get your mojo back.  The part about finding a new job really hits home for me.

I hope this will get you thinking about your mojo, as it has for me, and I hope you can help others achieve their optimal levels of mojo, too!

Ciao!

I'd Pick More Daisies

IF I HAD MY LIFE TO LIVE OVER

I'd dare to make more mistakes next time.
I'd relax, I would limber up.
I would be sillier than I have been this trip.
I would take fewer things seriously.
I would take more chances.

I would climb more mountains and swim more rivers.
I would eat more ice cream and less beans.
I would perhaps have more actual troubles, but I'd have fewer imaginary ones.

You see, I'm one of those people who live sensibly
and sanely hour after hour, day after day.

Oh, I've had my moments,
And if I had it to do over again,
I'd have more of them.
In fact, I'd try to have nothing else.
Just moments, one after another,
instead of living so many years ahead of each day.

I've been one of those people who never goes anywhere
without a thermometer, a hot water bottle, a raincoat and a parachute.

If I had to do it again, I would travel lighter than I have.

If I had my life to live over,
I would start barefoot earlier in the spring and stay that way later in the fall.
I would go to more dances.
I would ride more merry-go-rounds.
I would pick more daisies.

Nadine Stair, 85 years old.

Mamma Mia! What a Great Movie!

The movie, Mamma Mia!, is a great musical that was made in 2008.  It is based on the songs from ABBA, and it is a wonderful, fun movie.  The story line is so endearing, and the music will have you singing along and tapping your feet.  The first time I heard about this story was when I went to Las Vegas in 2008 and we saw a stage-production of Mamma Mia!  The movie was better in my opinion, due to the scenery of Greece and the calibre of acting.  Stars include Pierce Brosnan, Meryl Streep and Amanda Seyfried.  Amanda has a beautiful voice and she does a great job.

Make a date and see this movie (again) for a great, fun time. Rated PG-13 for some sex-related comments.

Have a great movie-watching time!

Find the Time and Organize Your Life

One of my interests is "organizing".  I pride myself in being able to sort, file, label, store, pack and pile my things.  I have found that if I have a clutter-free, organized home, car, or work-space, I feel more at peace.  If you can learn the skill of organizing, you will potentially have some more time on your hands to do other things that interest you and that are important to you.  I recently borrowed a book from the library, called "Organize Your Life: free yourself from clutter and find more personal time" (2007) by Ronnie Eisenberg with Kate Kelly.  This book was a fun, fast read, and I came away with two new ideas that have made me think differently with how I keep my life organized.

The first idea that I have adopted and I love - is that on my cell phone (Blackberry), I have an application called, "Tasks".  What I do now, is anything that I know is coming up or anything that I don't want to forget about, I put on my "tasks list".  For example, I have to buy some birthday and anniversary cards, so I have put this on my task list.  I also have bigger projects on this list, for example, "sell my son's bedroom furniture".  I love having all these "to do" items in one spot, and the authors state that it's good to have either a written list on paper or in a notebook, or a list on your personal electronic device.

The second idea that I have come away with has to do with bigger jobs.  I have a couple of rooms in my house where "things" are piling up, and I have been putting off sorting through because I know it's going to be a big, time-consuming job.  The authors point out that most people put these things off because they usually don't have a big block of time to do it, so it doesn't get done.  Their solution, which is a good one, is they say to break the job down into smaller parts, then do a little at a time.  They even suggest making a list of all the small steps, so that you have step-by-step instructions of how you will manage this bigger job.  I have started sorting some of those things already, and I am confident that in time, I will have it all done.

"Organize your life" is a good book that goes through the various areas in our lives - especially with regards to home and work.  Paper management is a biggie.  I would recommend this book for anyone that is feeling overwhelmed with all the clutter and time-robbing time-wasters in their life.

Now, if you're the type who feels that clutter, disorderliness and messiness are your thing, there is a book written for you, too.  "A Perfect Mess: The Hidden Benefits of Disorder - How Crammed Closets, Cluttered Offices, and on-the-Fly Planning Make the World a Better Place" by Eric Abrahamson and David H. Freedman (2007).  Check out this book if organizing is not your thing.

Have a great day!

Community Spirit - Treasures for All

Every May our neighbourhood has a community garage sale.  As it turns out, this year the weather was great, and we had many, many, many people out to look for treasures that were displayed on lawns, driveways and in garages.  The community was buzzing by 8:00 am, and the streets were absolutely congested with cars and people.  The folks that come to our community are from all over and they are eager to get that great deal.

My husband and I took a walk around the block at 9:00 am, and what we found was absolutely amazing.  To see the neighbours out, smiling, laughing, enjoying the sunshine and getting exercise was great.  It's nice to see that people can sell, recycle and reuse their unwanted items.  The main road into our community had cars parked bumper-to-bumper.  At one point, a vehicle had to back up all the way out of one of the streets because the cars were parked on both sides of the street and only one vehicle could pass.
People were everywhere.  There were trucks filled with furniture.  Wagons and boxes were filled with treasures.  I found two great books - for only $1.00!  It was a great day, and it was amazing to see so many garage-salers out.  I also spotted a sale where they were fundraising for a local charity.  There were all kinds of things for sale - toys, clothes, books, videos, CDs, tools, furniture, dishes, you name it!  There were homemade cookies, coffee, lemonade and iced tea for those hungry and thirsty "salers".
If you have some items that are collecting in your garage or basement, consider selling them at a garage or yard sale.  It's lots of fun and gets you outside and gives you an opportunity to meet others.

Pamper Your Peds

"Pedicures aren't just about your feet; pedicures are a total relaxation experience." ~Stephanie Dray

I just had a pedicure.  It was a gift I received from my husband as part of a package of pampering treatments at The Pure Escape salon.  I go for pedicures two or three times every spring/summer.  There are some shops that do a better job than others, so you have to find out what works for you.  Some salons have massage chairs that you can sit back in and relax while you get a back massage.  Putting your feet into the warm water and letting someone else look after you is very nurturing.  I know for myself, after a long, cold winter, my feet really need to be scrubbed, filed, massaged and my toenails are in desparate need of repair.  It's fun to pick out pretty colours to suit your mood that day.

Let's face it - sandal weather is upon us and out little toes are going to be getting some sunshine and attention in the upcoming months.  You owe it to yourself to be pampered.  There are a lot of beauty salons that do pedicures for a variety of price ranges. The last pedicure I had took one hour. Some places offer a manicure and pedicure special.  If you're too busy to make an appointment, make sure you try to get your feet in "summer-ready" mode and at least soak then scrub your feet with a foot file, trim your nails and put on some fresh polish.  You never know when you'll be needing to put on those sandals again!

Choose to pamper your feet real soon!

A Day for All Mothers

I picked up a book called, "Chicken Soup for the Mother's Soul" and I have started reading stories that "open the hearts and rekindle the spirit of mothers".  What the authors wrote in the Introduction was quite powerful.  The first line reads,

"This book is our gift to you, the mothers of the world.  In writing this book we wanted to honor mothers everywhere, but how can you thank a mother for the gift of life?"

The Gift of Life.  That is exactly what being a mother is all about, isn't it?  The relationship between a mother and child is so very special.  I attended a baby shower not too long ago, and it was so nice to see the new mother with her new little bundle of joy.  She was also blessed to have her own mother, her mother-in-law and her step-mother at this event.  In addition to that, she had three of her own grandmothers there.  This little baby boy Grayden was surrounded by seven mothers who all have a vested interest in his health, happiness and success.  Maternal instincts are so very strong, and it is passed along the generations. This little boy has had a wonderful start, surrounded by motherly, grandmotherly and great-grandmotherly love.

When I was a child, I found it odd to see other mothers being wished a "Happy Mother's Day".  I thought I was the only one with a mother, and that day was reserved especially for her.  Mother's are special and now that I am a mother myself, I appreciate and respect all that my mother did for me and my two brothers.  I now notice and appreciate all the forms that a mother can take.  I see it when a dog has puppies and she nutures her young.  I see it when the birds build a nest and prepare for their offspring.  I notice when celebrities like Madonna, Angelina Jolie-Pitt and Sandra Bullock adopt children from far-away lands in hopes of giving children around the world a better chance at life.  I see the love my mother-in-law has for all her children and grandchildren (and sons and daughter-in-law).

The one thing I know for sure, is "once a mother, always a mother". I have spoken to hundreds of elderly women who still worry about and are concerned for their adult children and grandchildren. The love of a mother is undying.  The love and gratitude we have for the mothers and grandmothers and other significant women who have passed before us is still there and lives on.  It is always a privilege to remember and honour those special women that have brought us life and nurtured our spirits years ago.

I close with this:  "God couldn't be everywhere, so he created Mothers".  Happy Mother's Day.

Thoughtful Gestures - A Little Goes a Long Way

“The smallest act of kindness is worth more than the grandest intention.”

One morning, I wasn't feeling well, and my son made me a cup of tea and left me a note that said, "Love you Mom, get well soon".  This warmed my heart.  This week I received a really nice Thank You card from a co-worker and good friend.  I had put on a surprise birthday party for her and she expressed her appreciation in a card that I received in the mail.  My husband bought a $3.00 wrap organizer for a good friend who admired the very same thing when she was over visiting the other day.  He surprised her with it - she was delighted!

Small, thoughtful gestures can really brighten someone's day.  These little tokens of affection and appreciation make us feel special and loved.  Little gifts can surprise and delight.  Notes can warm the heart.  A phone call, email or text message can also make us feel connected to those we care about.  A caring, listening ear is sometimes all it takes to make your heart fulfilled.  The gift of time is sometimes the greatest gift of all.  Spending time with loved ones in this busy, hectic life can help keep bonds and foster closeness and connections.  Generosity is also something that can make you feel great.

Make your day a thoughtful one!

Parting is Such Sweet Sorrow

"Out with the Old, in with the New".

I finally sold my old bedroom furniture.  I had two old wooden antique-style dressers since I was a child.  One was a mirrored vanity with five drawers and a chair, and one was a chest of drawers, with a "secret drawer".  I put the ad on Kijiji (local, online, free want ads), and I received a lot of interest, especially on the vanity.  I think there is a special group of people out there who really enjoy antiques and the sentimentality that comes along with it.

These dressers have been in my family for over 50 years.  My grandmother had them given to her, and she passed them along to my mom, who in turn passed them to me.  I had enjoyed these antiques that my grandfather so carefully maintained.  There was a handle missing on the large chest of drawers, and he told me that he had to put on a handle that was completely different, but that made it special to me.  Yes, I am sad that I have to part with these special pieces of furniture, but happy to have replaced them with something newer and bigger.  My husband and I can enjoy our new furniture for many years to come.

A woman, about 30 years old, came to our house this week to buy my old dressers.  She had a three and a half month old baby with her, her name was Emma.  When Sheri saw the furniture, she immediately fell in love with it.  Her face lit up and she smiled.  She said it was exactly what she was looking for, as she wanted to decorate her bedroom in the antique style.  She lives in the country.  I told her the story about the secret drawer and the missing handle.  I was so glad to sell this set to her, because I could see that she was so happy to take it.  I imagined one day, her little baby Emma  would inherit these heirlooms.  I am thankful that Sheri came along and it felt so right to pass my furniture on to someone who was going to look after it and treasure it.  Hopefully she will be able to keep it in her family for another 50 years.

Have a great memory-making day,

~Angela

Yoga anyone?

"Yoga is the practice of quieting the mind." ~Patanjali, translated from Sanskrit

Yoga is an ancient art that harmonizes the body, mind and spirit.  Yoga can provide many benefits.  All ages and abilities can do it, and continued practice of yoga will result in a sense of peace and well-being.  Sometimes people think, "I can't do all those pretzel moves", so they shy away from yoga.  Yoga involves stretching, and it ultimately will make your body more strong and flexible.  There are also claims that the practice of yoga will improve the functioning of the respiratory, circulatory, digestive, and hormonal systems. Yoga also brings about emotional stability and clarity of mind.

I talked to one of my relatives about yoga.  She attends a yoga class once a week, for one and one half hours.  She enjoys the benefits of relaxation, strengthening, decreased anxiety and has even gained a bit of height due to all the stretching!  Her licensed yoga instructor teaches Face Yoga, and there are many different types of yoga.  She is in a class of 16 other people, and the room is warm and comfortable.  At the end of the session, the lights are turned down, and the participants are covered in blankets.  Relaxing, instrumental music is played.  Another big part of yoga for her is the breathing exercises, such as belly breathing and back breathing.

I also talked to a good friend of mine who is a yoga instructor, and she said she does yoga for the "great stretch and challenge the muscles get. It is also a great clearing of the mind...and it replenishes energy."  She goes on to say that it's great "me" time.  She tells her students to put their thoughts of the day aside and that they can deal with them later.  She says that yoga "should not be competitive with the person beside you, but a questioning of the self.  Moving into stillness. It is the hardest thing to do!"  At the end of the class, the person should feel relaxed, but energized and clear-headed, ready to take on any challenge and make good decisions.  She goes on to say that people nowadays do not move their bodies enough, or, they do too much in their long day and that stress makes our muscles tighten and joints stiff.   Yoga helps move the body in a gentle way.  She ends with, "We must learn to relax, before we sleep so the body can get the proper rest it needs. The deep breathing or 'hatha' helps to regulate the body's energies and calm the mind and release stress so that good rest is possible."

My daughter took a yoga class at our local community club.  It was for young girls.  She really enjoyed it.  We also have a DVD that we have enjoyed and we do the "corpse pose" and the "warrior pose" in each session.  It is very easy to follow along.

If you are looking for a way to help balance body, mind and spirit, this is a good way to start.  There are many DVD's, books, and yoga classes that you can check out.  I searched, "yoga" on youtube.com, and it returned 184,000 hits.   I encourage you to give yoga a try!

Have a wonderful day!

Mission: Fun at akoha.com

"Add a Little Awesome to Your Life!" ~ahoka website

I was in a waiting room one day, and I picked up the March 2010 edition of the Reader's Digest.  There was an article on a Canadian man, named Austin Hill - A Canadian Innovator.  Hill talked about his vision that what makes people rich is not the amount of financial wealth and assets they have, but it's their "social capital".  He believes that it's not money that matters the most, but it's one's reputation.  Those who live life with meaning and purpose, and who have a strong sense of community are more respected and idolized.  He says that love is more important than money.  His vision intrigued me, and I wanted more.

A new website, called "Akoha" was developed by Hill.  Akoha is a new free service (more like a game I think) that invites it's registered members to participate in hundreds of "missions", or real-world activities. The missions are simple and fun and they let you interact with the world around you in a positive way.  In return, you get feedback from your friends.  These missions can be played on their site from your computer or laptop (which I have done), or you can play on an iPhone.  The missions I've done already (my username is ladybrightside) have been fairly simple, yet meaningful to me.  My entries so far have been related to:  saying thank you in another language, signs of spring, and volunteerism.  I have made new friends, and earned "virtual" gifts and awards.  The more missions I play, the more awards I'll earn and that gets me closer to achieving Guru status.  So far, I have "Player" status.

It's really easy to sign up, it's free, and it's all good.  I've made contact with Austin Hill, and he's already commented on one of my missions.  It's lots of fun, and I invite you to give it a try.

UPDATE: Akoha is no longer in operation as of August 15, 2011.  See this article for more details: http://blog.akoha.com/

Changing Lanes: Go with the Flow

When driving your car, have you ever been stuck in traffic, in the wrong lane, finding yourself needing to get into the other lane? Think about how nice it is when someone lets you in. There is always someone that is needing to get to where they are going sooner than you, and someone who is taking their time. When you have a few spare seconds, please think about the times you need to be let in and give the next person a chance to get to where they are going. That can brighten someone's day.

The other day, I gave myself lots of extra time to get to an appointment downtown, and I was able to witness the thanks and appreciation I received from two other drivers that I "let in". Both of them, a man and a woman, made eye contact with me and waved their hand in appreciation. The lady went as far as opening her window and sticking her hand out and made eye contact with me in her side mirror. I hope that these two driver's paid-it-forward and let someone else in.

There's actually instructions on how to change lanes at eHow - check it out:   http://www.ehow.com/how_5446694_change-lanes-heavy-traffic.html

Have a great day!

Spring Has Sprung: Dancing in the Rain

"Anyone who says sunshine brings happiness has never danced in the rain." ~Author Unknown

The first good rain of spring is always refreshing.  It washes away all the dust, dirt and mould that has collected over the fall and winter months, and it gives new life to the grass, plants and trees.  Our city has turned from a dull grey/brown to a lush, vibrant green in literally a matter of hours.  The grass is looking so healthy and the leaves are budding on the trees.  The shine and gloss the water leaves adds to the brilliance of the colours.

When I came home from work, I found my daughter outside, in the rain, jumping on the trampoline with three of her friends.  They were all soaking wet, happy and it looked like it was a celebration of spring's arrival.  I saw a robin in the rain, looking for little worms in the grass, and this is always a beautiful sight.  My niece's facebook status said, "Dancin in the rain!".  Children, birds and people all over are celebrating spring's arrival with this first rainfall of the season.  We are feeling renewed and refreshed!

Enjoy!
